For the second year in a row, RPC is partnering with a local organization in Kentucky, Meridzo Center Ministries, that not only distributes meals from Feed the Hunger to local residents in need but supports the community in many additional ways in the Appalachia area.

We will be involved in a variety of mission projects throughout the community that support the work of the missionaries that are actively caring for their community through a variety of ministries. Some of the work opportunities we will have:

  • Feed the Hunger Food Distribution
  •  Heavy or Light Construction/Painting/Plumbing
  • Organizing
  • Cleaning
  • Landscaping

During the week, we are planning an optional trip to the Mine Portal 31 and the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum.*

Solomon’s Porch Retreat Center
202 Church Street, Lynch, KY 40855

Solomon’s Porch is the former Hospital for Lynch, Kentucky. It has been converted and is now used to house ministry teams, youth groups, reunions and hold mission planning meetings. Because this facility is a former hospital, not all rooms have private bathrooms. We do our best to provide every family with a private bathroom; however, this is not guaranteed. There is a “men’s only” and a “women’s only” bathroom facility with several showers and toilets for us to use.

$200 per person includes lodging and most of your meals.*

*NOT included in this cost:  two dinners during the week, meals traveling to and from Lynch, your family’s travel expenses, add-ons such as a trip to the coal mining museum.

Your travel cost will depend on whether you want to fly or drive.

For those driving:

Drive time from Flower Mound is approximately 15 hours.

For those flying:

Drive time from the airport in Knoxville, TN is approximately 2 ½ hours.

Drive time from the airport in Lexington, KY is approximately 3 hours.

It is imperative that you arrive in Lynch by 5:00 p.m. on Sunday night, March 11.  This will give you time to drive through the mountains during the daylight hours.  Upon arriving, we will unpack, eat dinner together, and have a large group meeting/worship service designed to prepare us for the week.

BEFORE AND AFTER THE TRIP

There are opportunities to drive toward Lynch a couple of days earlier and do some fun things in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area (snow skiing may still be available at that time), as well as driving up to the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, KY.

ATTIRE

The dress is extremely casual – jeans, heavy coat/gloves in case of snow, sweatshirts, work clothes, work gloves, boots or comfortable work shoes.  There will be no need to dress up!

OTHER

We encourage you to bring snacks your family might enjoy throughout the week. There are limited resources available to purchase those items once in Lynch. There is a Family Dollar and Rite-Aid nearby that is easily accessible.

Bring games that your family enjoys! In the evening after our meal and time of worship, there are rooms to gather for fellowship and fun.
